Sailing from Oban on the CalMac ferry "Clansman" to the Isle of Colonsay, which has been inhabited for 7000 years. It is an historic island, St.Columba having landed there in the 6th century. The Augustinian Priory, now in ruins, was built in the 14th century. This is on the adjacent island of Oronsay, separated by a wide area of tidal shell sand ?The Strand? which the Colonsay postbus crosses to deliver mail. Jura does not feature large in this video as filming was done at a time of travel restrictions. Islay was settled in the 3rd century, and became the headquarters of the Lords of the Isles at Loch Finlaggan from the 12th - 15th century after Somerled defeated the Norse invaders. Gigha is referred to as God's island, also with an ancient history. This video was shot before the community purchase in 2002. The paddle steamer "Waverley" passed us on our way to Colonsay, and so we made a short diversion to follow her on a few of her seasonal travels. Running Time approximately 57 minutes (Pal)
